History of Sialkot

An Ancient City of Trade & Culture

Sialkot is one of the important industrial cities of Pakistan with a very ancient history. Founded by Raja Sul and later reconstructed by Raja Salivahian — who built the city’s famous fort — the name “Sialkot” itself means the “Fort of Sia.”

After independence, Muslim migrants from India settled here, shaping its modern identity. Due to its proximity to the Indian border, the city was affected by the wars of 1965 and 1971. Today, Sialkot stands as Pakistan’s second largest source of foreign exchange, driven by its world-class exports and overseas remittances.

Sialkot is located in Punjab province near the Chanab River. The northern part is very fertile while the southern part is less so — both are watered by the Chanab. Main crops include wheat, barley, rice, corn, millet, and sugarcane.

Sialkot is a city rich in culture. People of different castes and backgrounds live here — including Jat, Aryan, Kashmiri, Mughal, and Gujjar communities. The culture of Sialkot represents Punjabi culture and its impact can be seen across different areas of life in the city.

Different Punjabi dishes are famous in Sialkot. Some of the well-known dishes are Tandori Chicken, Bhuna Ghost, Nihari, Chicken and Beef Biryani, Keema Naan, and Sarson da Saag. Famous sweet dishes include Phirni, Jalebi, and Sheer Khorma.

Punjabi is spoken by 95% of the population on a wider scale. Punjabi dialects spoken in the city include:

  • Majhi — spoken by the majority
  • Dogri/Darhab — spoken by people of Jammu and Narowal districts

Other languages like Urdu, English, and Pashto are also spoken in Sialkot.

Traditional dresses of Sialkot are dhoti, khurta, and khussa. However, shalwar kameez, trousers, and shirts are now also commonly worn by the citizens of Sialkot.

Wedding functions in Sialkot include Mehandi, Barat, and Walima — closely resembling the wedding traditions of other cities in Punjab. Mehandis are performed before the Barat, during which girls wear colorful dresses and sing mehndi songs. After Walima, a rasam called Muklawa is performed, in which the bride visits her parents’ home for the first time after marriage. All these functions represent the rich traditions of Sialkot.

Punjabi culture dominates the poetry of this area and clearly reflects the Punjabi mindset. Poets like Baba Farid, Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussain, and Waris Shah have been celebrated in the city, and their Punjabi poetry has been translated into many other languages.

Sialkot has produced very famous poets throughout history. It is the home of Allama Iqbal — the greatest poet the world has ever seen. Other great poets and writers like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, and Asghar Sodhar also belong to Sialkot.

Sialkot has many historical places that represent its culture and serve as a great centre for Punjabi heritage:

  • Shrine of Imam Ali-ul-Haq
  • Remains of the Sialkot Fort, including the Tomb of Pir Muradia Shah
  • Birthplace of Allama Iqbal — converted into a museum containing his personal belongings and a library of diverse books
  • Puran Well — associated with the Punjab folklore of Bhagat Puran

Numerous theatre organisations are working for the promotion and development of theatre in Sialkot, including Shaheen Arts Council Adda Pasuiyan, Dramatic Society Islamia College Sialkot, Al-Shahkaar Art Society Sialkot, and Khan Art Council Sialkot. They are also producing good quality actors.

The atmosphere and standard of theatre in Sialkot is generally good. However, due to the availability of other forms of entertainment, the level of audience for theatre is decreasing day by day — though families in particular still enjoy visiting theatres. In recent years, the quality of stage productions has declined due to vulgarity, causing many people to avoid stage shows.

Punjabi music is dominant in Sialkot. Bhangra is the most listened-to form of music, but the trend of mixing Punjabi music to produce new varieties is gaining popularity. Various music academies — including Sun Sangam Academy, Pakistan Arts Council, and Sub Rung Musical Group — are working for the production of high quality music and producing good quality singers.

Punjabi forms of dance are famous in Sialkot and are performed at different events like weddings and festivals. Different Punjabi dances such as Bhangra, Jhumar, and Gidha are performed on various occasions, with both men and women participating.

Numerous organisations are working in Sialkot for the promotion and development of literature, including Daera-tul-Adab, Bazm-e-Urdu Jammu Kashmir, Anjuman Shabab Urdu, and Bazm-e-Anees Sialkot.

Sialkot has a very good educational system with excellent infrastructure, providing many facilities to students. Many educational institutes operate in the city, offering facilities in medical, engineering, law, and virtual education. There is also a separate university for women in Sialkot.

Different sports are played across the city. Cricket is the most popular sport — Sialkot’s cricket team, known as Sialkot Stallions, has participated in numerous cricket tournaments. An annual golf tournament is also held at the Sialkot Golf Club.
